  • What You Should Know About Bamboo Shades

Posted on May 27th, 2010 Jesita Jerik No comments

Bamboo shades can be used in a variety of ways in the home. Inside, the can serve as window shades in an informal room. Outside, they can provide a shaded retreat on a patio, porch or veranda. The shades effectively block sunlight and provide privacy. Made of bamboo, the shades are also a green alternative for providing comfort to your family.

Bamboo is a quick growing grass that may increase in height by as much as a foot each day. Many shades use young immature bamboo that has grown quickly. Once the canes are harvested, more are produced regularly. Bamboo, while growing, lowers greenhouse gases and is much more environmentally friendly than is anything made of plastic. It is a renewable resource and its growth provides jobs for persons needing work.

Thin bamboo canes may be used whole to make the shades. In addition, larger canes may be cut to make shades that have wider flat slats. Most shades use very a very simple mechanism with a cord that when pulled rolls the shades from the bottom. The shade mechanism may have a cord catch to hold the window shades in a rolled up position or the cord may be tied off to hold the shades in position. Bamboo can even be used to make Venetian window shades by choosing larger canes and cutting them to width. The once cut, the canes are pressed flat and processed much like bamboo flooring.

Some of the less expensive shades are those that use whole thin bamboo canes to form the shade. The un-split bamboo is very water resistant so these shades work well outside the home. In addition, since there is air space between the canes, the shades can be left down and still allow a gentle breeze to blow through the shades. If you are expecting a wind storm, the shades should be retracted, but they are very sturdy and do a good job otherwise.

During the winter months, it is a good idea to store bamboo shades used outside in a dry storage area. Moisture is not a problem during the warmer months as it will dry quickly. During the winter, however, moisture may collect on the canes and fabric portions of the window shades and remain there long enough that mold begins to form. The mold can be unhealthy and can ruin the appearance of the window shades.

Bamboo is great for use in the home too. Shades can be easily hung to provide a room divider or privacy in one area of a shared room. Bamboo is available in many colors. It may be bleached to almost white. It can be heat treated to bring out some of the unique characteristics of the material. It may also be stained just like wood to almost any color imaginable.

Bamboo window shades are filtering window shades. They do not block out all of the light, just some of it. Some natural light will still filter into the home but the glare that disrupts computer use and television viewing is blocked. Outside of the home, they prevent heat from filtering through the glass of the window.

Bamboo shades offer an inexpensive way to lower the cooling cost of a home for the summer. Bamboo is a renewable resource.

  • Window Treatment Options: Roller Shades

Posted on December 16th, 2009 Jerikat Jennison No comments

Technological advances in the materials used in making rollers shades have created a growing popularity for this affordable window treatment. The window shades are available in styles that will fit any decor and can meet the requirements of any room easily.

When choosing your shades it will be important to consider their purpose. Shades are available that are very sheer and are used primarily as the backing for a heavy drape. Other shades are heavy and are the primary window treatment for a room.

When the room must be dark during daylight hours a shade that is made of a heavy fabric and has a blackout lining will make the shade appropriate for the room. In addition, by installing the shade within the window frame you will be able to block any cracks of light that might get into the room.

These shades often are made of a textured fabric top and a dark heavy liner. The top may be in a solid, natural looking material or may have a color and design that matches the room decor where it is installed. The window shades often have a design or pattern that brings a bright and colorful focal point in the room when the shade has been drawn.

Bamboo roller shades are often used for areas that will be informal or on patios. The most common patio roller shades found in outdoor areas are bamboo weaves. The bamboo shades are easy to use and very durable. They withstand windy and rainy weather conditions during the winter. The affordability of these window shades makes them an easy addition and brings structure to an open patio.

Shades are often used in formal rooms as a backdrop for the drapery of the room. These shades are often sheer and provide added depth and texture in a room. When used with a motorized control, the window shades can be raised and lowered with out disturbing furniture or drapery.

Mechanized controls for roller shades are gaining in popularity. The header of the shade contains a battery operated or electrical motor that raises and lowers the shades via a remote control. When the shades are inset in a window frame, there is no need to have unobstructed access to the shade in order to adjust the shade.

Placing the window shades in hard to reach areas in a home adds to the appeal of the decor and can create a unique focal point on a high wall. When the shades can be controlled using a remote control device, the amount of light that enters the room can easily be controlled. This will allow for more insulation in summer months and protect furniture from damaging UV rays.

Roller shades that are resistant to mold and mildew are an excellent choice for a room where there is steam or moisture. When used in a bathroom, the window shades can add to the focus of the bathroom, provide privacy, and protect the window frame from moisture damage.

  • House Shutters are Gaining Popularity

Posted on August 31st, 2009 Gus Kopalinski No comments

Do shutters on most houses really do anything? Many house shutters ideas involve what are called decorative shutters that only look good but provide no real benefit. They are made to look like the real thing but they really are for aesthetic value only. If you get a close look at most shutters you see on houses, you will find the majority of them are just for decoration.

Real working shutters, on the other hand, can provide real protection from wind, rain, and sun. In some of the states where hurricanes are a threat, homeowners install storm shutters and hope they are strong enough to protect the windows and house from very strong winds. Most houses though, don’t have a need for real working shutters and the homeowners just like the shutters look.

Shutters can come in a variety of styles and colors and can be tailored to give a house a vintage look. They can also come in more modern styles. All in all, decorative shutters are a great way that is relatively inexpensive to add a little flair to the outside of a house. Many people who own houses realize that with very little out of pocket cost, they can raise the “curb appeal” of their house.

Exterior wooden shutters are what most people initially want for their homes when they start investigating shutters. But wood is not the only material that exterior shutters can be made out of and in fact, it is one of the least durable. Outside shutters can be made of fiberglass, vinyl, composite, and aluminum materials many of which stand up to the elements better than real wood. The fact is that all those materials can be made to look just like wood and in many cases they wont warp and wear like real wood will.

This makes these other materials often times a better choice for your exterior shutters than the wood that you originally thought you wanted. Additionally, since most exterior shutters are merely for decorative purposes, they are never over the windows themselves and are just mounted on the sides of the house. The only time you see house shutters is when you are at a distance and it is impossible to tell the difference between a real wood shutter and one made of another material.

  • Watch the Design Budget Make For Happy Clients

Posted on March 30th, 2009 Veronica Wakeham No comments

Over the years in Yaletown and now in the Sinclair Centre in downtown Vancouver, I have developed many creative concepts for design clients in order to take on work for them. The client gets understandably excited over the styles and tiles, but the numbers cannot be overlooked. Attention to budget early in the process is vital.

The budget gives me an idea of what clients are prepared to spend. It is understood that I must use this figure as a tool in sourcing their products. It is my job to take a list of often over one hundred items, linens, art, furniture, rugs, lighting and match that against an estimate of how much the client indicated is an affordable dollar range for the scope of work and quality of goods.

Beyond costing there are aspects to most interior design projects that can be anticipated. The size of a residence hints at the amount of space planning and drawings needed. The type of remodeling will tell you how many which trades and related permits are to be required. Professional designers have trusted trades so they can probably make a good estimate of their costs given the scope of work. When you get into the sourcing of materials is when the fluctuations can occur that balloon a budget.

The client always wants to know how much the job will cost. My advice to any designer is to confront budget head on. Do this early in the relationship as you ask your client lots of questions. Find out the scope of work soon enough to inquire about the budget and to qualify the client. Otherwise you may do a lot of up front work in vain.

You won’t hurt anyone’s feelings by asking how much they intend to spend for a design project. How else can you give a proper estimation of the quality and scope of work you can provide but to know the size of the budget. This conversation will lay the groundwork for building realistic expectations of what is to be delivered.

Within a block of my showroom there are dozens of skyscrapers, a cruise ship terminal and convention centre and major high-end shopping. Even the passport office is my neighbor. I see thousands of professionals a week and talk to dozens about design. The common dilemma is a shortage of time. Too busy lives. They get to know my capabilities and turn the job of design over to me so they can get on with their busy lives.

Numbers are so important because the cost of the overall project has to match the beginning budget as closely as the design matches the concepts that were approved by the client. I get a client to sign off on the details and the cost of each and every cost, item by item so there is no confusion.

When the grand ta-da is revealed and the clients stroll from room to room getting acquainted with good design, the designer’s true success will come from an absence of any feeling that the money was not well-spent. The design will show the effort but numbers reveal much more.

  • Bali Blinds Are The Dream Of Modern Windows

Posted on February 8th, 2009 Molly Miller No comments

It surely feels so good to have a house with large windows. Light chases depression away and makes you smile more often than usually. However, your privacy is also important, so make sure you buy blinds or other type of window coverings.

One of the best choices in blinds are the cellular Bali blinds. However, if you don’t have the budget for such blinds, you can always buy the PVC ones, which look good for a long time, but after a while need replacement.

The blinds buying decision can be a tough one, because of the great variety of window treatments available. From roman shades to vertical blinds, to wooden shutters or aluminum blinds, there are literally hundreds of options. Choose with your soul and try to match the spirit of your home.

Many blinds, shades and curtains don’t darken the rooms completely. They just filter the light, creating a comfortable and stylish effect. If you want full darkness, you’ll have to buy special blinds or shutters. It is your choice.

It is well-known that humid weather is one of the biggest enemies of wood. Therefore, wooden blinds in rainy areas like the tropical ones may be a very bad idea. Take care and do some research, as there are materials like the faux wood which are resistant to water.

A room seems empty without window treatments. Home designers must be very happy because they have an extraordinary tool for creating unique decors. The window blinds can match the couches, the wallpaper, or the carpets. Interiors need harmony, and everybody agrees with this.

When you clean your window blinds, try to follow the indications from the manufacturer. I f there aren’t any, buy yourself a very small brush, or a special cleaner for blinds. Be patient and clean the slats one by one, although at a moment in time you may feel like throwing them on the window and buying new ones.

For a modern and sophisticated touch, you may try the Bali vertical blinds. with a big variety of textures, models and colors, such blinds can match an office as well as a nice dining room in your home.
