  • Glass Stair Balustrade: Achieving Visually Harmonious Architectural Balusters

Posted on October 11th, 2011 Davey Golinson No comments

Installing a balustrading is necessary in many infrastructures with existing rail systems and those that have a lot of pedestrian traffic. As such, enterprises, in one way or another, need to set up rail systems with complementing balustrade that not only provide stability or support in pathways and walkways but also comply with various safety regulations. To install one, companies need to search for a good solutions provider that can easily put up industry-certified systems and components, which are reasonably priced. They must look for products that employ quick-install components. Using solutions that are easy to fix and align, though may be deemed pricier compared to setting up one from scratch, could actually provide extra savings in the long run.

First, the anatomy of a staircase should be clear. Its basic parts are the tread that you step on, the riser, which is the vertical part between treads, and the banister, the part that is on the side offering support when going up and down. The banister has three components: the handrail, which you actually grasp when using the glass stair balustrade, the balusters, posts that support the handrail, and a newel post, a larger vertical support at the bottom of the staircase.

A handrail will usually shake if the balusters loosen in the mortises where they meet the handrail. A mortise is a hole cut into a piece of material in which another piece, the tenon, will be inserted. For the first solution you should prepare: a hammer, wood shims, carpenter’s glue, a small block of wood and an utility knife. You will coat a shim in glue and hammer it into the joint between the handrail and the baluster. Use the small wood block to drive the shim in, keeping it between the shim and the hammer. Your purpose is to fill the gap and not to drive the pieces that join apart, so hammer with care. Trim the part of the shim that is left outside of the hole.

Most prefab and modular baluster components for outdoor and indoor use are made of aluminium or steel with an all-weather finish. The coat is applied via industry accepted techniques to guarantee that your rail system can last long and with less or zero maintenance cost. Likewise, these components adhere to various industry regulations and are tested to support a continuous load of 75 kg per meter or a concentrated load of 90 kg. Most baluster components are compliant with important local and international installation codes. For instance, these have the required minimum height above the finished floor and the proper spacing between spindle sticks. They have the acceptable longitudinal gap or slots above the floor and provide no obstruction to the passage of a hand along the rail. The laws regulating the dimensions of the rails and balustrade systems vary, especially those that are set up in porches and terraces and mid- to high-rise buildings.

Visual Harmony: Why Does it Matter?Balustrade systems, and architectural columns and decorative capitals on exteriors can act as dramatic visual elements of a structure. Following some simple guidelines will help to ensure that the visual impact of these elements is pleasing to the eye. Balusters that are not proportional to the overall scope of the building or balusters that are not spaced in relation to columns and other architectural elements can contribute to the feeling that “something’s not quite right”, also referred to as visual discord. Similarly, when choosing a column, pay special attention to its proportions in relation to the overall building design and elevations. It is essential to maintain visual harmony in both commercial and residential structures since you want people to be drawn to a site.

  • Great Remodeling Projects For Your List Of Things To Do

Posted on July 24th, 2011 Brian Q. Xavier No comments

There are enough home improvement ideas to last you for a while. The three common factors that will probably affect your decision the most will be cost, time and personal style.

But the average homeowner usually finds it difficult to get motivated to take care of what is important around the house. We all have experienced the satisfaction of creating something that can be utilized for fun a later time. Then we all know the things that are needed to help and protect the worth of your home. They are normally less enjoyed, but when you put your home up for sale and get a good price for it, then it makes things much better.

Are you familiar with the concept of passive solar energy devices around the home? Most people are not, so we will tell you about a really cool thing you can do with your windows. The right window coating can reduce UV rays and glare in windows. The reduction in glare means lower costs of energy for you. Limiting UV exposure from the sun’s rays also means that your furniture and fabrics aren’t as likely to fade – at least not from the sun. Don’t apply this coating until your window has been treated with a cleaner that is designed to dissolve organic matter on windows. Your coating will be more effective as a result. Just about every homeowner is familiar with siding as well as the need for fresh paint if you do not have siding and there is no brick involved. You’ll find that there is little fun and a lot of work involved in painting your house even if someone else is doing the heavy lifting for you. Before you even pull out a paintbrush you have to clear out the old and give yourself a fresh surface to being with. This is precisely why so many people are turning to aluminum siding. The insulating properties bring additional benefits like lowering energy bills. Of course that’s only after you’ve started your very own paintbrush burning party to celebrate never needing to paint again.

One of the more boring home improvements involves the pipes that are located in and outside of your home. You can view them in terms of the purpose that they have such as taking water away for the home or bringing water into the home.

On an annual basis, they should be checked for possible leaks, corrosion, and damage. If you have hard water, then this means that a larger amount of mineral deposits can accumulate. While you are at it, hopefully your hot water pipes are insulated. If so, then you can inspect both your insulation and pipes at the same time. It does not matter if your home improvement project is full project or just done in swatches according to how much money you have at the time, it will increase the value of your home. Do not worry about calling businesses in your community to see if they have free consultations. They will give you good advice, but make sure that you get a few second opinions too.

One thing that’s getting increasingly common with home improvement projects is risk management software. This software makes planning and carrying out projects much easier. You reduce the risk of commencing a job that you cannot finish. Additionally, it enables you to improve your resources. Why don’t you obtain some risk management software right now?

  • Redecorating For Real Life Living

The best decorating ideas and themes won’t work when you don’t consider your family and just how it functions in the home. For example, if you have some young children in your house, the wear and tear that naturally occurs needs to be factored in. For instance, chenille fabrics certainly are a better choice than silks for obvious reasons. Also, dark or medium colors are better choices than lighter ones simply because they tend to be more family friendly than white, for example.

Floor coverings also should be considered. The feel and appearance of a sisal rug can be quite appealing, but when you’ve got some children crawling around it’s difficult on their knees. If you select carpet, pay a little bit extra for built-in stain resistance, because it will help once your children or pets have “accidents” or track in dirt. If you are an empty nester or don’t have any family, then go ahead and choose the marble floors and luxurious fabrics that you want. The key is to always consider your personal style and preferences in combination with how and who will be living in the house, too.

    Making Decorating Decisions

When it comes to decorating, there’s no wrong or right way to decorate, except for some guidelines that might help to produce a balanced and cohesive home decor. The options available to you for decorating may be very intimidating as you can find so many, both offline as well as on.

Utilizing magazines and books to look at and tear out pictures of rooms that speak to you can greatly assist in assisting you to know what your desires and style are. You do not have to “copy” a room exactly – take cues from pictured that attract you and if you can duplicate an element or 2 or 3 that you just love about it, do it.

    Create a Harmonious Room

If you desire to have the scheme of the room to become harmonious, it requires some type of unifying theme that runs through it and ties it together. When you’ve got that, you’ve got harmony. Maybe the unifying theme within your family room is “family” – using fun family picture frames will be an essential aspect in the space, amongst other details, the bigger details like comfy furnishings.

The harmony of your room is basically based on scale. Avoid using low seating if the room has soaring ceilings, and also be mindful that a large, bulky armoire cannot look good in a room containing standard height ceilings. Fabric selection can also be crucial. Your couch might look wonderful upholstered with chenille, but probably not your antique Louis XVI chairs.

Color will also be a vital part of your room’s design, because it is very important. A great goal is always to have one or maybe two common threads of color within your room, and patterns are welcome as long as they are in some manner linked to the big picture. If you consider the way you put together an outfit, you’ll be able to use similar “rules” when you choose the patterns and colors for the room.

    Integrating Artwork and Accessories

In the same manner which you select jewelry to accessorize an outfit, you can choose some accessories which will turn your plain room into one that is extraordinary, which is a terrific way to inject your own personality into the room. Should you be more traditional, then grace your walls with some serious artwork displayed in simple black picture frames, but if your style is a bit more free-spirited and fun you may use more funky and fun accessories and picture frames, like perhaps some lavish decorative picture frames.

Your artwork and accessories don’t need to be from the same time period; it often is a lot more interesting to mix new and old accessories – fine objects with found objects, new purchases with some hand-me-downs.

Sometimes all that you need to do is rearrange artwork or furnishings and accessories to offer a room a whole new look and feel. “Shop” for accessories and artwork – even furnishings – inside your home; simply moving one or two or even more items from one room to a different one may be all it takes to update your room. You might be surprised by the amount of new treasures you discover you had forgotten about, or just weren’t seen in another room.

So, if you are wanting to decorate your house for real life living, just follow a number of the great tips which have been shared. You will certainly be satisfied with the outcome!

  • Tying Your Room Together With Colors and Accents

Posted on January 19th, 2010 Jean Parker No comments

Once you are finished redecorating a room in your home, you will often find that you need the one item that can bring all your colors and theme together. This finishing touch should act as the focal point of the room and can something as simple as a painting with all the right colors or an area rug that blends in with the theme.

Getting the right look to a room can start with the decor or it can start with the paint or the architectural details. A perfect built in bookshelf or mantle around the fire place can be the thing to build around. The accessories can accent the way the room is built, not just what you put in it. The wood work and brick and tile work in a room is the perfect thing to get started with for picking out a theme or focus.

Beautiful wood work is a time consuming and expensive and should be something that you showcase and use to the advantage of a room. Don’t cover up the architectural details of your house; use them to your advantage to make the home stand out. Even though it seems like an easy thing to do, and in some instances it is, trim work like crown molding and chair railing can turn a room into something beautiful and functional and exciting. The strategic use of trim, not over using it, can make a room look stylish and adds a decorative and architectural detail that can make a big difference in the appearance and feel of a room.

The way the colors and textures and patterns of the room fit together is not an easy thing to accomplish. Picking out the right colors can be time consuming and difficult, but matching everything together can be done with a little effort and some help from the experts. Checking for ideas in magazines and online is a good place to start, and asking questions and looking at other people ideas can help put new ideas and thought in your mind.

Don’t be afraid to experiment and put things together that are new and that you might not be sure about. The worse thing that can happen is that it doesn’t work and you have to try something else. No big deal, but you will never know what works and what doesn’t work without trying.

Changing your home dcor can be a time consuming and money eating task. There are various home furnishings and decorative pieces for you to choose from that you may find yourself overwhelmed. When you are in this situation a great thing to do is browse through remodeling magazine and find a design that you like and take it from there.

  • Brighten Your Home By Adding Lighting

Posted on December 10th, 2009 Barry Wax No comments

Your home may have sufficient lighting, but you may want to consider how to add to it. Sure, you probably have the general lighting in place, and you can see how to get around your house, but your home may be lacking character. What can you do to make this place your own? The answer could be better lighting.

You typically have ambient lighting, but there are always a few little niches that you may want to think about lighting. You might consider places like a pool or ping pong table. Track lighting could be just the thing for this purpose. Track lights are attached to the ceiling but at the same time can be directed to a certain focal point in your room. These fixtures work by an electric charge that goes along the track. Specific niches can be spotlighted by these fixtures, without providing light to the entire room. The advantage of these forms of illumination is the fact that, provided you bought the spotlight model, you can direct the lamps to any area of the room.

Track lighting can also hang like a regular light fixture. They are not as easy to move but it can still be achieved. They will still lend personality to a room.

Your molding along the hallway can be made more interesting by rope lights. Dark areas can be lit up in this way. When you have company or are giving a party this illumination can be very effective. It can usually make it safer and easier for your guests to find to the bathroom.

Skylights are another style of lighting that not everyone thinks about. They are worth the extra effort of installation as they can be a nice addition to a house. Some thought should be taken before installing skylights. You should consider whether the space needs natural lighting. An entertainment place may not benefit from a skylight.

Proper installation should be taken into consideration. You may want to think about professional help if you do not have much experience in this. If they are not installed well you could risk having leaks in the roof, which is not desirable.

These are a few good examples of home lighting. No matter what you need, there is probably some form of lighting out there to accommodate it. If you believe your home needs a little bit of character, then start looking for some home lighting. See what you can find and light up your house. In the end, you’re the one who needs to be happy with the character of your home.

  • Choosing A Bed Right Now? Here’s How.

Posted on November 14th, 2009 Peter Bunarton No comments

For some time I have been writing about choosing bedroom furniture. Lets have a look at choosing your bed today. Because choosing a great bed is a big part of achieving the ideal bedroom for you.

And the bed you choose doesn’t just bear on the way your bedroom looks and feels, but also of course, and most importantly, on how you sleep.

A big part of how successful your bedroom furnishing and decorating will go is determined by your bed and bedding. They set the theme of your bedroom. For example you may love four poster beds but a four poster may not go with a contemporary feel to your bedrooom.

So before you do anything else you need to choose your bedroom theme. The theme sets the overall tone of the room, and determines the color scheme, the furnishings and the bed and bedding. Now some beds are invisible, just going underneath the bedding, but some are not, and so if you eventually decide on an invisible bed the bedding will still have to go with the theme.

There are many different types of bed, though in reality many are just different variations on mattresses. At the end of the day it’s really just the mattress that you sleep on, a bed is just a place to hold the mattress, it’s the mattress that determines how well you sleep. An air bed is really an air mattress, with adjustable air pressure so that the firmness can be controlled by the user.

Similarly a water bed is a bed with a mattress filled with water. The author can testify to how good a good water bed can be, he used a water bed for some years and it produced probably the most comfortable sleep possible.

Or you could just go for a platform bed. This is pretty much as it’s described. A platform on which is placed the mattress of your choice. So all you need to do is to decide on the mattress, and you’ve got yourself a bed. A platform bed is often used in conjunction with a futon mattress.

So when it comes to selecting the bed for the bedroom remember you have to make a number of choices. You need to select the look and style of the bed you want as well as the type of bed from a comfort point of view. And if you’re going for a regular mattress, instead of, say an air or water bed type of mattress, you then need to research some of the different considerations for buying a mattress.

So there’s quite a bit to think about when you’re buying a bed, and your choice of bed is a critical one to the bedroom decoration process, and one of the first things you decide on, after you theme. Everything comes from your choice of theme.

  • Hot Tips For Choosing The Perfect Bed For You.

Posted on March 13th, 2009 Peter Bunarton No comments

I have been writing on decorating a bedroom and choosing great bedroom furniture, to achieve the bedroom that you’ve always wanted. Today I want to look at one specific item of bedroom furniture, your bed. Because the bed you choose has a big bearing on the success of your bedroom decoration efforts.

And the effect that your choice of bed has isn’t just restricted to the way the bedroom looks and feels, but also how well you sleep, and that’s as important as just about anything else about your bedroom.

Remember that there are many different types of beds too, and do some homework before you choose. Many of the different types of bed are actually a different type of mattress. An air bed for example is in fact an air mattress, or simply a mattress filled with air instead of springs or some other type of material. The amount of air, or the softness of the mattress can be controlled by the user to produce a mattress that is adjusted perfectly for their requirements.

So when it comes to selecting your bed you have some choices to make. Firsts you need to select your bedroom theme, and that determines the look and style of the bed you choose. Then you have a range of choices about the type of mattress that you choose, and you need to spend some time trying out different mattresses to see which one suits you.

So there’s some of the things you need to decide upon when doing the bedroom decoration process, and the first one is to select a theme. The theme you decide on is where everything starts. Then you start on choosing your bed.
