  • Good Tips To Organize Clutter And Overall Clutter Control

Posted on March 28th, 2009 Carlton Markkrite No comments

Clutter can keep anyone from having a nicely organized house when they don’t know how to get rid of it. When someone does not organize clutter or lets their house get into a cluttered state then cleaning it becomes secondary to dealing with the clutter.

You will have to spend a lot of time trying to sort through the clutter before you can clean, and by the time you manage this you are way too tired to do the actually cleaning, or have no time left in the day. Listed here you will discover some tips to assist you in getting control over your clutter so it will not frustrate you.

The main reason behind most clutter is paper of some kind. Either newspapers, mail, papers from school or work and the list could go on, are most of what our house clutter is, but there is hope! There are many great ideas and ways of combating clutter in your home.

You should always go through the mail as you receive it at the house. Have a small trash bin at the door you come in after getting the mail, deposit all mail that is junk directly into the trash bin instead of laying it down in the house. Have a specific place for your bills so you remember to pay them. Some people use a basket others use a slotted holder for this purpose, you can position it by your phone or at your desk where you keep other necessary supplies as in stamps. Your important mail and papers need to be placed in an appropriate place right away, don’t say you will just do it after while, because after while does not arrive many times, and this is how clutter happens! You can effectively organize your papers from work that are at your house in the same way. Just make sure to have a stack or place for your ?to do? paperwork and file the other away in the correct place right away.

Many people have the under-the-sink type trash cans. Another good idea here is to put a bin for the old newspapers right beside it. Then when you empty the trash can you also pickup the old newspapers, and take them to the recycle bin at the same time. All parents get overloaded with the children’s papers from school on a daily basis.

Parents often times have a hard decision to make as to whether they keep all the projects their child creates, or throw some of it away in hopes of not cluttering up the house. But parents do not have to throw it away just place a plastic see-through bin in the room where you usually go through the child’s schoolwork or projects. Place the keepers in the plastic bin and discard the rest of it. You can then have a larger receptacle in the attic, basement, or bedroom to empty that bin into. This is a way to permanently keep your child’s precious artwork and other school accomplishments for time to come, your child will love looking back through it when they are older.

As you try to control the clutter keep a few thing in your mind. Do you actually have a use for this object or item? Now be honest too! Have you used the item in a year? If your answer is no, chances are you will not be using it again, so don’t just keep it laying around dispose of it in some manner. You can either sell it or possibly give it to charity if it is still working or not torn. If it is something that does get used but very little you can store it in the basement for 6 months, to see if you use it before getting rid of it.

Your seasonal decorations can be put away safely in the basement, attic, or other place for storage. Think about buying stackable large bins for storage, if you get the right style of these you can use them as drawers. I get flustered when I have bought a seasonal sale item, or I have found I have a seasonal item that was not put away, and it does not fit in its box, nor can I get it into another bin because everything is on top of each other. If you get the clear bins that you can have as drawers, then you can view what is in the bins easily, when it comes to decorating for that season again, you know which one to open.

You have to consider that if an item or object is damaged, broken, or stained it needs to be thrown out. Sometimes your seasonal things may get a bit worn looking but you still like to use them. But with anything else you usually are wasting your time trying to use it in this condition.

  • Concrete Polishing Fixes

Posted on February 18th, 2009 Rick Amorey No comments

I’ve been writing a lot of articles over the course of the last few weeks regarding concrete polishing. I came across it whilst going through sites on the internet. Since then, I have enticed my friends and family and basically, everyone I know about it. I have invited people over to see the concrete polished floor in my house. And, of course, the articles I have been writing.

And what’s not to like? Concrete polishing has all the combined benefits of a durable material like marble, a cheap material like ceramic tiles, and a sleek, elegant material like hardwood. With all that rolled into one package, it’s definitely the best choice that I’ve made for the house renovation.

Of course, there are a few negative qualities about it. Make sure the concrete you’re using can be polished, as not all concrete can be polished efficiently. A too porous surface, for example, will not have set well enough to have a proper shine after polishing. Note those concrete types that have a lot of cracks, patches and fixes. They can be polished, mind, but you will simply not be able to hide the fixes and your floor will not be perfect.

Pouring on a new layer of concrete on top of the damaged concrete might be a solution to this predicament. This would necessitate buying more concrete, but the cost will most likely be insignificant. Then again, I have been told this is not always a solution to the problem at hand. I must confess, I have yet to understand the exact readon for this, but it might have something to do with the new layer of concrete not settling with the old layer.

These, however, are minor setbacks and please do not let these hinder you from having a polished concrete floor, should you decide to go through with one. Concrete polishing is cheap, but at the same time, stylish and durable. To learn more, go to the Concrete Polishing website and meet some other enthusiasts of concrete polishing.

  • Roofing Tools You Need The Right Ones For Your Roofing Job

Posted on February 5th, 2009 Graham Williams No comments

You can not go wrong engaging a qualified professional for a roofing project. But with a little bit of time and knowledge and often with the help of a few friends, replacing a roof is a realistic do it yourself project. The key to doing it yourself rather than doing yourself in is the right roofing tools. These tools can be found at the local hardware store.

A slate cutter does just what the name implies, cuts slate and shingles. It slices through most roofing materials like a hot knife through butter. For even the thickest shingles an industrial version slices them easily. Some models have a punch to get them started, which as well offers better control in the cutting process.

Instead of throwing the shingles to the ground, which requires a constant trek to the perilous edge, consider a ridge bucket. These buckets are designed to hug the roof so they do not slip even on a steep incline. it is safer and easier to use this bucket to dispose of shingles.

When it comes time to install hip ridges and ridge cap, it is time to pull out a hip runner. Of all the roofing tools this is one the contractors always have, but do it your self enthusiasts rarely consider.

Seaming pliers are not for sewing. They’re for yanking shingles, especially stubborn shingles that almost have a mind of their own intent on staying in place. Seaming pliers include flat teeth to grip the shingle without tearing it. Add a good pair of thick work gloves to save your fingers and hands from injuries such as scrapes, bruises and blisters caused by gripping and pulling rough shingles.

What has a hammer head on one side and an ax and blade on the other? No, not a movie hero’s weapon, it’s a slater’s hammer. This roofing tool is used for both for removing and installing roofs. Do not worry about it going to waste after the roofing project, it’s also a handy every day hammer.

Most local hardware stores rent these tools as well as sell them. This way a roofing novice can use the best quality tools rather than one that’s cheaper to purchase. Keep in mind too that knowledge is a roofing tool as important as any other. These local hardware stores are also sources of information on roofing. Between books they carry and staff on hand who can give you advice, they can prepare a person for every step of the roofing process.

One place that we visit each and everyday is the kitchen, but often times functionality is put above the way it looks. This does not mean that you have to have a kitchen that is plain or boring. Sprucing up your kitchen can be a fun project that you can do yourself. Take note that it does not have to cost you a lot of money either.

If you have anything in your kitchen that is made out of wood like cabinets, you can restore it by applying a coat of varnish to it. Wood laminate can also be restored if you put a coat of oil based primer on it. By doing this you restore the sheen and luster that it once had.

Space can often be a problem in the kitchen. If this is one of your problems consider putting things in other places. You can store cookbooks on book shelves in your living room and put china on display at the dining room, this way you can keep the essential items for cooking in the kitchen and still have space.

You can add life to your kitchen by paying attention to details. Add some curtains that are color coordinated or line your walls with wall paper borders. This will instantly give something different. You can also use decorative jars and canisters to store your ingredients which can complement the colors of your kitchen. Cabinet knobs and handles can be changed as well.

The tiles on your kitchen will make a huge difference though you don’t notice it. This does not mean that you have to replace it. You can simply get it cleaned by a professional to make sure that the grout in between is clean and you will floors that look like they are new again. This will certainly cost less than replacing all the tiles.

  • Investigating Polished Concrete

Posted on January 30th, 2009 Bob Jones No comments

Heralded as the future in floor design, the following for polished concrete continues to grow. It’s main premise is that most structures use concrete in their foundation anyway, so why not use them for design? But to them, my question is this: Is polished concrete really worth the merits you give it?

Let us enumerate the many advantages concrete polishing claims over its peers. The main ones are beauty, durability, affordability and availability. I will go over each one, and then decide if this flooring method is indeed valuable from there.

If one looks at a well-done concrete polish, then you will probably agree that it is a beautiful sight. Everyone will notice it, and will even compliment the owner on his or her outstanding taste. But this is the catch; beauty, as has been commonly said, lies in the eye of the beholder. So this criterion does not really hold any weight.

But if beauty is not really an accurate criterion, then durability is. One of the things that you would want from your floor is ability to stay functional for a long time. After all, changing it on a regular basis will quickly result in it being expensive (which we will go to later). Concrete itself is very tough, but the polishing process closes the material, and makes it last even longer. This claim is 100% true.

Next comes the cost. Is it really as affordable as it claims to be? Since you do not need materials in the optimal case, then the most important payment is the one you hand to the floor contractor. Its relative cheapness depends on this person, so you better choose wisely. And to the do-it-yourself person, then I will say this; the machine is expensive, and the diamonds used for the actual polishing are even more so.

Finally, there’s the issue of availability. They claim that concrete is available as the foundation of your floor in the majority of cases; however, a major drawback for concrete polishing is not mentioned. Simply put, not all concrete is fit for a good polish. Polished concrete is a good choice, granted your concrete is polishable to begin with.

  • Install Metal Roofing-The Easy Way

Posted on January 21st, 2009 Ainsley Axelsson No comments

When it comes time to install metal roofing there’s one basic rule of thumb. If you cannot easily walk across the roof because it’s too steep, call a professional. Now that this rule is out of the way, if you want to have a metal roof but can’t afford what the professionals have bid, here’s how to install it.

The proper tools are essential. The list is a measuring tape, a chalk line with plenty of chalk, a good drill, a sturdy extension ladder and a reliable step ladder, pound of inch roofing nails, metal roofing screws, metal snips, and to hold the nails and screws a nail bag.

Measure the roof’s height and add the desired overhang, generally two to four inches. Make accurate measurements keeping in mind the handy man’s mantra “measure twice, cut once.” Then measure the roof’s length and height on both sides to figure out how much metal edging to add. Take these measurements to your roofing supply company. They will tell you how much roofing to purchase. Remember that 3 to 6 inches of unblocked air flow is needed between layers.

Although it is not necessary to remove the old roof before laying down a metal roof, it is best. Use a pitch fork, roofing shovel, or roofing pliers to remove the old shingles. Once this is done lay down 30 pound tar paper to serve as the base for the new roof. If there’s only one layer of shingles on the old roof, lay down 1″x4″x building length pine wood boards screwed onto the old shingles. Apply metal roof edging once the roof is prepared.

Start placing the metal sheets running from top to bottom. They are screwed into the wood slats, using a screw every two feet on both sides of the sheet. Each sheet must overlap the last. At the edge cut the last metal sheet so it’s just past the edge of the roof.

When the sheets are applied to both sides of the roof apply the metal trim along the edges at the sides of the roof. The trim also goes on the peak, first scoring it in the middle so it can be bent over the peak.

That covers installing the tin barn roof type of metal roof. Other types of metal roofs need different methods for installation. But those can be tackled every bit as well by a do it yourself person who wishes to install metal roofing.

  • DIY Turbine Building - Things To Know

Posted on January 18th, 2009 David Sullivan No comments

If there is one issue that is on everybody’s mind today, it’s that energy prices on the rise. Local electricity companies are jacking up the prices due to rising demand. Residential homes are even beginning to feel the crunch. Luckily, there are now ways to produce your own energy that can alleviate the stress.

One way that you can save money on your electricity costs is to build your own wind turbine. Wind power is an endlessly renewable, free source of energy - all that is needed is to take advantage of it. When building your own wind turbine, there are a few things you should think about ahead of time.

You’ll want to know where your wind turbine is going to go. You have to look for a place where there will be the maximum amount of wind energy, of course. It is ideal if you have at least an acre of land, and your wind turbine tower is higher than anything else in the area.

There can’t be any obstructions like trees or other towers that will obstruct the flow of wind to your turbine. Remember, even your turbine is in front of them in the direction of the wind, the wind speed will still be reduced due to the fact that they’re there. Take a careful look before you start building to make sure you have a good place to put it.

Looking for local regulations on wind turbines in your area is also important. Get all the required permits, and you’ll save a lot of money in the long run. It’s not that hard, really. Make sure it’s alright with your neighbors as well.

Of course before you actually start to build a wind turbine, you’ll want to make sure that you gather together all of your supplies and tools. Figure out what you’ll need for the job. Then go make the purchase so that you have everything needed on hand.

Look for detailed plans or blueprints which will help you build your turbine, and make sure you follow them exactly. They are specifically engineered to get the most energy out of the wind. You can find great detailed manuals in many books and online.

Building a wind turbine is really not a huge job, as long as you keep these considerations in mind. Make sure that you find the right site, check on government regulations, get together the tools and supplies, and then simply follow the plans. In no time you’ll be saving money on energy.
