Why Should You Buy New Carpet And New Carpet Pads?
Posted on August 18th, 2010 No commentsFor the most part your carpet pads go unseen. However they serve a very useful and practical purpose. Good carpet pads (or carpet cushions as they are also known) help your new carpets wear more evenly, last considerably longer and feel better underfoot than carpeting alone. When you are shopping for new carpet buying good carpet padding to go with it is essential.
There are three main types of carpet pads (or carpet cushions as they are often referred to these days) that most carpet stores carry: fiber, sponge or foam and rubber. There are also different types and grades within each grouping. Thickness of cushion and weight in ounces per square yard are the yardsticks which allow you to differentiate one from another.
When choosing the right carpet pad you have to keep the traffic level that your new carpet will see in mind. For well traversed areas such as hallways and staircases a pad that is no thicker than 7/16 is the best choice. If you choose carpet pads that are any thicker than that the carpet above will flex too much and it will wear unevenly.
When you have new carpeting installed you may wonder if you can simply use the old padding that is already in place. The answer to that question is usually no, as to do so will void the manufacturer’s warranty in many cases. In any case, why use old worn out padding underneath brand new carpeting?
When they are installing a customer’s new carpets most good installation firms will offer to take old carpet padding away with them. Most reputable companies also participate in carpet pad recycling these days as well. The average carpet pad will not degrade in a landfill, so by recycling the carpet pads these firms are really doing their bit for the environment, as well as helping their customers out.

What Is The Difference Between Carpet Types?
Posted on June 23rd, 2010 No commentsYou finally made the decision, carpet is the way to go for your new flooring. That was the easy part though, as now, as you will find when you hit the local flooring store there are several different types of carpet available to choose from (not to mention hundreds of different colors and patterns) Some types of carpet work better in certain rooms and situations than others, so it is helpful to know a little bit about each when you are out shopping. Here is a brief primer:
Frieze – Frieze carpet (properly pronounced “free-zay”) is great for very high traffic areas. Its very twisted pile is made up of shorter fibers that naturally curl in a number of different directions. This means that footprints and marks left by the vacuum do not show as readily as they do on other types of carpet.
Texture Carpeting – When it is being manufactured the fibers of a texture carpet are cut and twisted in a similar manner to that of frieze carpeting but to a much lesser degree. The resulting look is somewhat different but texture carpets still do very well in high foot traffic areas.
Loop Carpet – Also known as Berber carpet, loop carpet is made up of tall loops, all roughly the same height, and is usually multicolored rather than just having one solid main hue. The variations in color make loop carpeting a great choice for spaces where spills and stains are more likely to happen – your kid’sbedroom for example.
Wool Carpet – All natural and beautiful to behold wool carpeting is often the first choice for those seeking to make their home a more environmentally friendly place. Some people are surprised by how easy it is to care for as well.
Pattern Carpet – The patterns are created in the cut of the carpet pile itself, with “islands” of higher cut carpet pile contrasting with lower cut loops to create an overall three dimensional patterned effect. Pattern carpeting is great for adding a modern and contemporary touch to any room in your home.
Plush – Plush carpeting-as you may gather from the name- is the ultimate in carpet luxury. Its velvety softness and deep hues make it a sumptuous choice for adding the final touch to a formal living or dining room.

Choosing The Right Carpet
Posted on March 3rd, 2009 No commentsChoosing the right carpet is an undertaking that involves lots of research and careful thought. Today when you visit a carpet retailer or the model home at your favorite builder you have decisions to make and some factors to carefully consider in choosing a quality carpet.
Cost is always a factor to consider when purchasing a piece of cloth to cover your floors and that also comes with a responsibility to research what it is that you are buying so that you can bring home the quality that you deserve, This means choosing the right type of fibre that makes a quality carpet.
There are three main types of yarn that goes into the process of manufacturing a carpet. One is nylon, polyester and olefin (another name for olefin is polypropylene). Usually Olefin is used in a commercial construction looped pile carpet that is used mainly for high traffic areas and comes with a very short and dense construction used in industrial, institutional and commercial settings.
If you are looking for luxury for your home then a nylon with a “twisted” construction will give you years of wear and the twist count with a dense construction is going keeps it’s overall look appeal longer than a sparely constructed carpet which will get “matted” down very quickly showing the worn areas.
Stay away from “berber” style carpets they tend to unravel when teased or pulled in any kind of way and need expensive mending also installers have a hard time making the seaming joints on the carpet and will “zipper” over time and of all things salespeople tell you not to use a power head on the carpets when vacuuming them…Go figure!
The biggest factor will be the density nevertheless and of course keep in mind that the “feel” will give you sense of whether the carpet has some retention or “bounce” to give a look of revival after vacuuming. It is important to note salespeople sometimes do not understand how a carpet wears and will only see the beautiful appearance when new and not when it is 2, 3, 4 or 5 years of wear and tear and not performing at all, so be diligent in your fibre construction research.
