  • Choosing Furniture For A Bedroom

Posted on August 27th, 2010 Abbie Osborne-Wilson No comments

At times when you’ve had a hard day all you want to do is head off to the bedroom to relax and recuperate from a stress filled day. This is why your bedroom should be a room that makes you feel calm and relaxed. You can fix the mood of your room not only by the color you use on the walls but by the kind of furniture you put into it.

Most important to this room is the bed, it’s where you will sleep and if you’re not comfortable it will be noticed in your everyday mood. The bed is important to make sure that you’re able to sleep and get enough rest each and every night. Don’t get a cheap bed just to save money; you will pay for it in the long run. Get a bed that you can sink into and get all warm and comfortable in.

First is the size: the bed shouldn’t eat up a bulk of the bedroom floor space. It’s important to have adequate space for you to walk freely and accommodate other furniture pieces. Make sure the bed you choose suits your needs as well as those of your partner, if any. Also, consider each other’s sleeping habits and health issues; a bad back, for example, could call for a special bed or an orthopedic mattress.

Add in some nice shelves to the room, this is a great way to keep the room more clutter free. You can put up books or pictures on these shelves. But make sure you pick a size of shelf that will fit the size of the room. If you want you can even paint the shelves to get some more color into the room.

The floor is one very important factor in a bedroom that’s often missed. Bare floors give any space a cold and solitary feeling. Give your bedroom a warmer, homier feel with rich and thick area rugs. Aside from making nice decorative pieces and cover-ups, rugs also work as sound insulators to dampen the sounds of heavy footsteps. Rugs come in many different colors, sizes, shapes and textures, so you have a practically limitless selection. You could play it safe by using neutral colors like white, brown or black. You could also be bold with bright or high-contrast color combinations like crimson on white. An area rug can be placed at the foot of the bed, next to the dresser or even at the bathroom door.

Adding in a wardrobe or even a nice armoire will give you extra places for your clothes and other things to be placed in. Put your TV into the armoire or wardrobe and close the door for a less cluttered look.

Bedroom Design experts all agree that it is essential to use area rugs. And as discussed here one of the most popular ranges is the transitional rugs.

  • Romantic Greek Decor In The Bedroom

Posted on August 9th, 2010 Abbie Osborne-Wilson No comments

If you are trying to create a great romantic bedroom feel for your and your loved one, why not choose a Greek style? It will make everything flow without any complications.

If you have a four post bed which stands out as if it belongs in a castle, you’re set! The larger the frame is for the bed the better for this Greek style look. Greek crochet patters or something with floral should be chosen as the bed style. You can place a basic white bedspread on your bed with these style throw pillows to make the bed look grand.

Green plants or other floral plants which bring a scent to the room are another Mediterranean technique to give you comfort and a better nights rest. It will make you feel as if you are sleeping in a bed of flowers in nature.

Area rugs could be placed on each side of the bed along with at the end of the bed. You can tie in the color theme in the rug as well or even a unique design which flows with the other colors and patterns in the rooms design. If you are considering changing the carpet or the flooring which is already down, try going for a stone look. Now a days they have great laminate stone flooring which looks like the real thing. This will make your bedroom feel as if you are right out of a Greek novel.

For the walls, use sand color wall paper or simply just paint the walls white and hang a couple of beautiful oil paintings up. If you can find a picture of Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love and Beauty of Cyprus, it would give the room more romance.

Wrought iron or brass candle holders with wonderful red and white candles are also a great addition to add throughout the room to bring romance to the design. They are inexpensive and also will make your room smell wonderful.

Add wicker bed side cabinets. Add a wicker chair in the corner with a few cushions on it. For a unique design why not cover it with a Greek crochet patterned material. Another area rug can be placed here under the chair if the bedroom is large enough.

If you are shopping around for new furniture for your Greek style bedroom, try choosing darker colored wood. It will accent the rest of the decor for the Mediterranean feel. Vases with wonderful floral designs are another plus on each of the night stands to bring some more plant like style to the decor.

The Mediterranean Greek style will give your room that romantic feel any couple deserves. Why not pamper yourself when it’s time to relax?

  • Decorate A Child’s Room In Feng Shui

Posted on July 13th, 2010 Abbie Osborne-Wilson No comments

You may sometimes hear using Feng Shui as the decorating style for a child’s room. You might wonder what this means. Feng Shui claims to attract certain energies depending on the arrangement of furniture and space available in a room. It can also relax and inspire a child and make them succeed in school. Feng Shui is also a way to improve safety in your child’s life.

Figure out a design before you try bringing it into the room. Giving yourself ideas which are positive and negative for the room will help you out as well. If your child is one who has a hard time concentrating then you know to make the room ore soothing. You also want to make sure that the room is safe at all times. You can choose soft fabrics and lighting to create a great Feng Shui space.

One great factor when placing a child’s bed in the room with the Feng Shui style is placing the head of the bed against the wall. This will allow them to get out on any side if they need to turn the light on or off for any certain reason.

Clutter must be consistently purged. Remember to place all electronics, books and toys in storage bins tucked away in the closet or under the bed. You can also use a beautiful armoire to hide other unnecessary distractions, such as a television, video games, or a stereo.

Children need plenty of rest so they can be productive the following day so you want to create a relaxing environment for your little one. You don’t want something too bright or overwhelming which will distract them and make them feel over stimulated.

Placing a soft area rug in your child’s room will also add texture and balance. You can either use a patter which matches the theme in the room already or just a basic solid color to blend it together.

Even the wall and ceiling angles play a part in Feng Shui. With sloping eaves, posters are not recommended to be put at the bed’s head since it creates a sensation on pressure hanging above your child’s head.

If you aren’t quite sure what Feng Shui is but you want to create this style in your child’s room or any other room in the home, try researching it before decorating a space. Another great idea to make sure your child’s room is safe and has that Feng Shui feel is to sleep in it for a night. Look around and see what the vision is before you rest your head and also when you wake up. Also take into consideration shadows which may appear with the glare of the night light. Make sure it’s not going to scare your child if they wake up in the middle of the night. On the other hand, if the room is bright due to a street light then place darkening shades on their windows to give them peace. If your child is old enough to help you decorate their room encourage them to help you. This will be a great learning experience for them and also show them that other cultures have great design techniques. Also ask them how they feel when they enter their room. Make sure nothing is harsh to their eyes and they feel at peace with the decor.

When it comes to redoing a bedroom you have many choices that should be made. But what you should always keep in mind that the room should have a relaxed feel to it, and one that you can fall asleep in. This is why you should choose the colors of the room wisely, and not put in something that will keep you or another awake. The bedroom is where you want to go to feel safe and relaxed after a long day. So before you start redoing that bedroom make a plan, and get the color choices out of the way.

Most people prefer to have white, beige or neutral color schemes for their bedrooms, which reflects peace and tranquility. However, you can always experiment with different colors depending on your mood or changing seasons. There are many people who prefer using summer and winter colors for their bedroom decor. It is necessary to keep your personal tastes in mind while decorating your bedroom as well. If you want to match your bedroom set and the rest of the furniture with the color scheme, then there is absolutely no harm in it.

You can add to the walls and floor to make the color choices you’ve made look even better and tie the feeling of the room all together. If you have a larger room, try adding in some night stands and a dresser that is more elegant looking. Or maybe you want the more relaxed feel so go with a few simple pieces of furniture.

Curtains are a very important accessory to your bedroom. You may change the room completely with the right kind of curtains. Nice velvet will add the elegant touch to any bedroom you put those kinds of curtains in. Or maybe even a nice colorful silk; just choose wisely when making the choice. Of course you cannot forget the addition of an area rug, pick any kind that will tie the room together, a rug will naturally add nice warmth to the room.

Check to see that your rug is easily washed though. You don’t need to have a rug that you have to take to the dry cleaner to have cleaned. Adding on some nice colored throw pillows on the bed will add a nice touch to the bedroom too.

For a softer lighting look put in a lamp, either a floor lamp or a lamp on the night stand. Overhead lighting is nice, but that nice lighting from a lamp will make the room more romantic. Add some warmth to that bedroom and get it feeling just right.

  • A Contemporary Look For Your Bedroom

Posted on July 20th, 2009 Emely Gardner No comments

The very fact that you are interested in redecorating your bedroom the contemporary way is that you have either seen it in a book and liked it or may be on the net or in an outlet. The first thing, before redecorating and buying any furniture, is to understand the contemporary theme.

Colors and lines seem to be the main issue when you are considering contemporary style. These colors include beige, black and white, dark brown furniture and more. You will want to look for straight simple lines that are not bold. Shapes should be simple too. The main result in the contemporary look is clean and simple. Open spaces and of course uncluttered walls are the way to go.

You don’t want anything cluttered. Organization is the way to go with this look so go through everything and discard what you don’t need or use. The bedrooms seem to always catch the overspill from other rooms. Walls should be white in color beige, or a pastel green. Neutral colors help to accessorize and not take over. The windows shouldn’t have little to no coverings. Make sure that if you do use curtains the rods are simple too.

Beds are usually low, spacious with self-color bed covers, tucked in neatly to show the edges. Frills are not part of this theme. A neat area rug at the foot of the bed in self-colors or geometric patterns should be placed to match the surrounding colors.

All furniture should be dark in color and not over designed. You will need a small closet for your clothing and a chest of drawer. The furniture should be simple as well. No lines or curves allowed in this design. Handles and knobs should be plain.

You need a mirror that is stylish and well designed. You want a dressing table that will highlight the look of the room. If you are purchasing new furniture keep it simple in design; straight lines, no curves or fancy designs. Handles and knobs are plain. If you want to accent the decor add some plants to your room like tall palm trees placed in every corner of the room. You can also use artificial plants in the room.

Potted plants add life to the room; tall palms look elegant when placed in the corner of the room. Artificial plants with different color leaves brighten up the room and are also easily maintainable. Placing them on side tables adds a little color to the simple look. Abstract paintings in neat, black frames stand out on the wall. Too many would cluster the walls and contradict the style, so it should be kept to a bare minimum. A transparent jar with color stones would add glamour to the modern style, even a bowl of potpourri; a mix of your choice would enhance the fragrance in the area. At the end of the day, you would be very happy with your room, the one place you would always come back to after a hard day, to just relax.

  • Creative Ways Of Decorating A Teen’s Bedroom

Posted on July 18th, 2009 Abigail Foster No comments

When your child reaches their teens they completely change their outlook and want to change the way their bedroom looks. Their ideas and hobbies change and they want different things; they have grown out of their baby bedrooms and now want bedrooms that are cool! Here are a few ideas for making a teenagers’ room look cool.

Decorating a teenager’s bedroom is centered around his/her interests. The choices are limitless and they’re nothing short of surprising for some. They will feel more at ease by being surrounded by the things they love.

Some boys may just want their bedroom decorated in certain colors, such as, blue, lavender, metallic. Perhaps, they are into funky stuff or rock music. Any of these are good choices for a teenager.

In a bedroom for a girl, there are lots of accessories that can be used to make the room stand out. Nothing livens up the flooring in teenage bedrooms more than colorful rugs. Area rugs like fluffy rugs or patterned rugs are a good idea. Place any type of snazzy rug around the room in various places like under a plant or a fancy chair. A fluffy circular rug in the middle of the room will stand out and give the room color. Even for boys area rugs are a great idea. Place a big square blue rug in the middle of the room and place their desk over it. For boys, plain rugs are better. Themed rugs can be purchased for boys, such as football type rugs. For instance, a Liverpool rug can be found or any other football team rug of their choice. Even funky area rugs can be placed in the room.

Fabrics in the room like curtains and beddings can also reflect the teenager’s interest. Usually though, the beddings are plain in design with the room’s motif or a complementing color instead of the prints and graphics typical of a children’s bedroom.

A lamp is crucial to have in the room for studying and late night reading. It can be placed on a study desk or on the bedside table.

Decorating also encompasses the walls. Aside from the usual wall paint, wall hangings will make the room alive with the teen’s presence. They can hang their favorite posters, photos and artworks.

To complete the teenager’s haven, have comfy seats for when the teens have their friends over. The bedroom is the usual hang out place, so making it conducive for entertaining friends is important. Beanbags and cushions on the floor make nice seats, especially if arranged decoratively. If there’s more space, perhaps small chairs or tools and a coffee table can make up the “receiving area” of the teens’ bedrooms. To end, couple it with a plush area rug.
