Is A Canopy Bed Right For Your Bedroom?
Posted on July 15th, 2011 No commentsMost individuals take radically different approaches to home furnishings. For some, it is all about designing the most comforting, conventionally attractive home possible. People like this tend to have fairly boring straight forward tastes in furnishings, but they do it very good.
They don’t display iron furniture. They choose not to display artifacts from far off places, unless they are some pretty innocuous artifacts designed for tourists. They don’t paint their rooms in unusual colors, and rarely use wallpaper unless it has flowers on it. These are not the type of people who put up canopy beds in their houses.
In the past, the canopy bed was once a very mainstream type of furniture, nowadays it appeals to a very specific type of person. Canopy beds are for the whimsical and the adventurous, the dark and creepy, and the people that are impossible figure out.
Although almost anyone would be happy to get an heirloom canopy bed as a gift from an ancestor, few people would really be able to bring themselves to take it out of storage. I was very fortunate to inherit just such an antique bed. It is one of those massive sized iron frame beds that they do not make any more.
It is big, solid, and weighs so much that it requires four people to carry. It is also very hard to disassemble, and almost impossible to transport. Still, for me a canopy bed like that was well worth it. I hired some movers, carefully packed it, and placed it in my bedroom.
It looked elegant in there. It was a big iron frame with spiral accents up and down the sides of the canopies. There were actual cast iron lions feet on it, as well as intricately carved figurines on the side!
The only problem with the bed was the canopy. It could not last the years as well as the iron canopy bed head. It was old, faded, and a little bit mildewed. I took it off and placed it in storage, but only for sentimental value. I knew I would never have the opportunity to use it again.
Finding a canopy bed canopy, however, did not prove too difficult. They are very easy to make so, after a bit of obsessing, I picked out some beautiful fabric. I hung it in strips from the sides of the bed, creating a thin diaphanous barrier from the rest of the room. All in all, the effect is beautiful and haunting. I can’t tell you how much I love that bed.

Pros and Cons of organic Mattresses
Posted on October 29th, 2009 No commentsThere are many advantages of organic mattresses and they are almost always a better option than other mattresses. For example, they’re dust and allergen resistent meaning that they don’t carry allergy trigger spores as easily as other mattresses do.
The natural wool or organic cotton used in the mattress also provides warmth naturally in the cold winter time. Some mattresses such as the Simmons organic mattress have the special characteristic of absorbing humidity to create a dry sleeping environment.
At the same time, it provides air circulation of using natural materials and helps to regulate the temperature of the mattress. Organic mattresses will help you breathe with ease.
Sleep is a key factor in causing many illnesses that people suffer from. With a lowered immune system from lack of sleep, a person is more susceptible to all kinds of diseases.
Some organic mattresses are made from natural rubber. These are also very durable and offer the same health benefits such as being resistent to allergens. This is another great mattress for asthma sufferers.
The disadvantages to using organic mattresses are few and far between. The first disadvantage you might have already noticed is its price. The price of an organic mattress is a lot higher compared to traditional mattresses.
Another drawback is that some people say that their organic mattress has a strange smell. The last drawback is that the mattress will get worn out when it’s used for a long time. However, organic mattresses do not wear out faster compared to any other mattresses.
The most important thing is to make sure the organic mattress you’re buying is truly natural and not just an advertising ploy. There are some stores/manufacturers who do that and you have to be careful. Don’t purchase without inquiring about all your questions and validating all of your concerns.

Are Propane Heaters Right For You?
Posted on August 10th, 2009 No commentsPeople often like the idea of getting propane heaters for their patios, but might think it will be a big, involved, process. Yet it really doesn’t have to be. If you know you want this type of heater, as opposed to one of the other options like an electrical or gas one, you still have a lot to choose from and a lot to help you.
Everybody is going to tell you about the good things you can get from their heaters, so it is the bad ones you will really need to look at. The problems that come up with them might mean nothing to you, in which case this is a great choice. Otherwise, though, you might want to look elsewhere when you see the issues.
One thing you’ll figure out pretty quickly is that you’re going to have to refill the tank a lot. This can mean a lot of trips, which are bad enough on their own, but then if you forget to make them when you need to, you might be in the middle of a party and suddenly have the tank stop working for everybody there.
Some people will tell you that you can avoid this problem. The problem is they probably have the money to do so, and you might well not. You can send propane lines right to the place outside where you need them, but it does cost quite a lot. If you can’t afford it, you’re back at the starting point, looking for a solution.
Another obvious problem is the danger level. True, you’re going to have the concern no matter what type of heater you own, but it seems to be an especially big concern here. There is an open flame that poses a bigger threat, especially if you have children. You’ll need to keep things away from them and anything flammable.
However, all this said, there is still much to love about these heaters. For one thing, they’re very affordable and are accessible by almost anyone. If you need to move them, it will be easy to do so, which is great if you ever want to redecorate. You just have to be sure the good aspects outweigh the bad ones for your needs.
The general point is to weigh the good and the bad and see if this is a good choice for you. If it’s not, you can look elsewhere, but if it is, you can look at your options more closely. Ask for advice from others, or look for it from experts. If you have something that works for you and keeps you warm, it’s great.

Bed Makeover
Posted on May 28th, 2009 No commentsIn these busy, competitive and fast-paced times of professional life overlapping personal life, the restive nature of a sanctuary at home and a comfortable bed is truly an appealing thought for many homeowners.
The bed is our asylum, our personal refuge from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The primary tag is that it’s a place to rest and sleep. Sure, but wouldn’t it be nice to have an ultra comfortable bed that is beautiful too? Stylish is not only for clothes. Beds can be chic too.
Styling a bed is fuss-free. It doesn’t cost much either. Some key items and the right color can transform this furnishing into an instant beauty.
So, while family and friends stack up big and stylish cushions with nice-looking covers, and this may be trendy too, you can go one step ahead of them and give latest fashion trends and wall-colors of your bedroom besides fabric choices for bedroom furnishings a look-up – right here!
The most important thing is to decorate with your preferences in mind. Similar to renovating the rest of the house, using items that appeal to your taste is vital to create an end-result that is easy on your eyes and more importantly, to your heart.
By following these methods, you can make your bedroom a pleasure spot, a secret hideaway or just a leisure time space only you and your loved one have access to. Read through for more than basic bed-make up tips – in our hot, new segment on home decorating for the romantic, but practical homeowner.
Consider yourself as the queen and the bed your throne. Comfort is key to a deep slumber. Choose a mattress that is right for you. Some people like the not so soft kind but others crave for the bouncy spongy texture. Maintain the mattress by washing it once every two months and changing the sheets regularly. Furnish the bed with soft pillows and a suitable comforter, especially during the cold winter months.
To make a crisp bed, pull duvets and sheets tight around the mattress and turn in covers since loose sheets look ‘too lived in’ and while you’re out buying mattress covers, pick up one for your costly duvets too – it increases the duvet’s durability and makes the bed more comfy too. The best fabric blends for bed linen that is cool, stylish and classic is Egyptian cotton, which is breathable being a natural fiber and also does not attract lint. For a romantic, fresh and stylish bedroom, pick light, neutral colours in cotton blends, which will also make the bedroom look bigger.
Adding other decorative items like throw pillows will make your bed cozier, especially if it’s quite big. Placing an area rug nearby, like at the foot of the bed or beside it is also a beauty booster. Your bed and surrounding area will look complete.

What is Visco Foam
Posted on February 9th, 2009 No commentsIf you find yourself waking up tired, or your body is aching because of the sleep that you got the night before, it may be time for you to give a different kind of better chance. I am referring to beds that contain a visco foam or a visco elastic foam to give you the greatest nights sleep you could ever imagine.
Visco foam was developed by NASA, an attempt to decrease pressure caused by the extreme G. force astronauts received during takeoff in space shuttles. After developing Visco foam, NASA never even used it in the space program. However this left a disco foam to be used by many other markets such as, medical fields and retail mattress manufacturers.
The reason mattress manufacturers showed interest in visco foam is because it allows the bed to elevate pressure points during sleep. Visco foam was extremely expensive when it first came out and could not be afforded by the general public. But in recent years it has become less expensive to produce and is now widely available in almost everyone’s price range.
The most common use of visco foam, is in mattresses, mattress topper’s, and pillows. It’s a really to retain heat, has allowed many people with aching bodies to fill better throughout their nights sleep, because of the added heat. They visco foam mattress tends to be quite a bit more dense than an ordinary foam mattress making it more supportive, but the same time it is a lot heavier.
With this in mind, they mattress containing Visco foam will usually sell for more money than a traditional mattress, however they disco foam mattress will last longer due to their ability to resist dust mites. Visco foam is made from polyurethane with additional chemicals that help to increase its density and viscosity level. Due to the chemicals used to make visco foam, new visco foam mattresses give off a distinct chemical odor but will decrease over time.
