  • Understanding The Facts Of Fireplaces For The Home

Posted on December 19th, 2011 Adriana Noton No comments

During the winter, one favorite creature comfort is to sit next to a large, open fire to keep warm. Depending on the design and local building codes, fireplaces can burn a variety of fuels, including wood, natural gas or propane. They can be the large enough to heat the entire home, or cozy enough to fit in the corner of a bedroom.

For much of the last century, homes mostly had ones built in the living room out of brick or stone with a large chimney. At one time, they were constructed with wide openings so they could also be used for cooking. But these proved inefficient. Many homeowners stopped building fires in them regularly when central heat became cheaper to install and use.

In general, it is built to burn a type of fuel that draws cool air into the front opening. The air is then heated, radiating either back into the home or is released up the chimney with the smoke. One that is poorly constructed or designed will allow the fumes to escape back into the house. Newly constructed ones must meet local building codes to make sure they will operate safely.

Thanks to newer design methods, homeowners have a wide range of styles to choose from when building a new fireplace, or replacing an existing one. Inserts built out of metal can be put into the opening. They have vents on the front that pull the hot air out of the insert and into the room. People living in flats or apartments can also buy a small unit that burns ethanol, which is a clean burning fuel. And that means it does not create any fumes and can be safely used indoors.

To make sure they are maintained, homeowners should have theirs inspected yearly, usually before the cold weather starts. There cannot be any cracks or missing bricks, because this can allow the fumes to escape back into the home. A flammable substance called creosote is produced when burning wood. And if needs to be cleaned out to prevent too much of it from accumulating and causing a chimney fire.

Fireplaces must be vented to allow the flow of air to take away the smoke and fumes. Never burn charcoal, because it creates an odorless gas called carbon monoxide, which can kill anyone in the home. Also, do not hang anything flammable over the mantle that is so close to the heat that it can catch fire.

To prevent small children and pets from getting too close to the fire, a mesh screen or glass doors can be placed in the opening. These also keep any popping embers from floating out and starting a rug, or a wooden floor, on fire. A fire retardant mat can also be placed across the hearth.

Fireplaces are often one of the central features of a home. Some are used on a regular basis house warm during cold, chilly evenings. Others are mostly used as a decoration, with a large mantle that holds pictures or other personal items. But no matter how they are used, they are one feature many buyers look for when purchasing a new home.

  • We Love Shoes!

Footwear is clearly what defines a person, and should be given more heed to than even clothes, since they need to be constantly polished, kept spot free, aired, to ensure their long life.

The following are some tips on how to maximize the life of your favourite shoes.

The complete personality of anybody is not complete without great shoes or footwear, and to maintain them, requires proper care in terms of how they are kept, polished, and so forth. Following are a few handy tips to make sure you take proper care of an important angle of your overall personality.

    * Always make sure you store shoes properly in shoe organizers. These could be racks, or trees, wherein shoes are kept/hung pair by pair so as to reduce any chances of the dirty soles of one soiling the upper side of another. Besides, such a practice also helps you to keep them in a very clean and proper state by giving them proper air. * Another advantage of using organizers is that shoes are always easily accessible, and you can know as to which shoe is not in a proper condition to be worn and needs to be replaced, or stained and needs to be polished. Further, this also helps in making sure that in case due to some infection one pair of shoes is smelling, the smell does not pass on to the other shoes. * Always ensure that you air your shoes once a month, or better still, every fortnight. This is done by leaving them out for a couple of hours in the sun to make sure that any chance of infection is eliminated, and also helps shoes with special material like suede, etc. in staying in a good condition. * In case of leather shoes, make sure that they are polished once in every 4-5 days, regardless of whether they are used that often or not, since this helps in keeping the shoe material in a good condition, and also allows it to hold on longer. * In case of shoes with alternative material like suede or nu buck leather, make sure they get sufficient air, and spray them with the recommended spray from the a good dealer or the shop from where you purchased it. These kind of shoes have a greater tendency to get spoil due to the sheer nature of their material. * Make sure that you always use shoe horns to put on your shoes. Often, it is only the backside of the shoe that gets damaged, purely because of our inherent habit of stuffing our foot whenever we are in a hurry. Keep the shoe horn handy, maybe in the shoe racks for example, and you might save your shoes a good year and a half.

Posted on March 27th, 2010 Marion Jones No comments

Many people like to have suntanned skin. Athletes, people who train in gyms, people with high-profile jobs, executives and many more like to have an even, all year tan. Then there are those who want to begin their tan before they go on holiday to a hot destination. This is very sensible, because it is too much of a shock to the skin to go from no sun to 40c in one day. It is far better to prepare your skin to get used to higher temperatures before you go.

This is all very well if you live in a hot part of the country, but if you did you would not need to keep topping your tan up anyway. Therefore people turn to tanning beds, tanning booths and tanning lamps. Some people buy their own tanning bed or booth, but most people go to a tanning salon. If you have a spare room and some spare money, owning your own tanning bed is definitely a superlative luxury.

Owning your own tanning bed means that you do not have to plan journeys to the tanning salon, that there is no travelling or waiting and that your tanning bed is always waiting for you. However, you will be unassisted, so it is a very good idea to buff up on the health and safety advice associated with tanning beds. There ought to have been a pamphlet with the tanning bed when you bought it, but if you bought it second hand it could have been lost.

If your safety booklet has been lost, you could write to the manufacturers and suggest to pay for a replacement or you could just follow the general advice that applies to all tanning beds. Another good idea is to have a couple of sessions at a tanning salon and learn as much as you can. However, in general, behave toward your tanning bed as you would the sun in the tropics, that is with a great deal of respect.

The first thing you certainly have to do before getting onto your tanning bed is rub a sun tan lotion which includes a moisturizer into your skin. This is where you will need to employ the most caution. When you are outside in the sun, you want to block some of the sun’s rays, because you want to spend a couple of hours outside.

However, in a way, the opposite is the case on a tanning bed, you want to get bronzed and you do not want to spend hours lying on the bed. Therefore, you will need a specialized moisturizer, tanning lotion. There are enough of them in the pharmacy, just ask.

A lot of people like to wear a head scarf or bathing hat to protect their hair from drying out. Then there are safety precautions such as goggles to protect your eyes. Never, in any circumstances, look directly into a tanning lamp while it is on without eye protection. If you are going for an all over tan, you might find it useful to put a few sticking plasters or band-aids over your pink bits or men might need a hankie or a flannel.

Check your tanning bed’s safety timer, before using the bed for the first time and regularly after that. Make sure that it is precise and that you can rely on it. After the tanning bed session, shower and remoisturize to replenish your skin, but not with the same tanner-moisturizer you used to tan with.

It is a well-known fact of life that a lot of individuals want to have a fantastic celebrity tan just as if they had been lying in the sun on a secluded beach in Malibu. You would be able to get an all over tan with no clothes or strings to restrict the tanning process on your concealed beach. But secret beaches do not come cheap, do they? Buying a tanning booth is one the several different ways that you can use to get the all over tan that you want.

As with tanning beds, there are many brands of tanning booths on the market for both commercial and domestic tanning bed apparatus. So, you will have to investigate into these different tanning booth systems closely in order to find one that suits you and your budget. There are nevertheless a few notes of caution that you should bear in mind when choosing your tanning booth.

When you are using tanning booths, you will notice that these booths use very high temperature ultra violet bulbs to rapidly bring about the alterations your skin will have to go through in a tanning session in order to get bronzed. Just as when using tanning beds, you will need to use some protective eye glasses when in the tanning booths. These safety glasses will shield your eyes from becoming damaged by the powerful, but harmful ultra violet rays.

On the other hand, if these ultra violet rays are quite so dangerous, why do people desire to subject themselves to such lengthy periods in tanning booths? Well, the response is really quite plain, it is just because of the fact that people want to have a beautiful, golden coloured skin. Another point is that, since there is so much dreadful information in the papers about the dangers of sun tanning, it is simple to understand why some people decide to try the sunless tanning route instead.

Which is where tanning booths, among other products, come into their own. However, having mentioned a few details and dangers, if you are still thinking about acquiring a sunless tan then you may be interested in reading the benefits of using a tanning booth. The first advantage is that you can get a tan whenever you like. The second advantage is that the tanning booths take up less space than tanning beds as they stand in a vertical attitude.
