If you are fond of looking at magazines or books about interior designing, you will be amazed on how they design each room regardless of its size. If you are a keen observer, you will notice that 98% of these pictures have rugs on them. Why? Because rugs play a very important role in enhancing any room.

One major advantage of using area rugs is that they are cheap. You do not need to spend too much buying other room accessories and ornaments to beautify an area. Moreover, these rugs protect you from the cold tiles and concrete floors. The hardwood floors are also protected from scratches made by furniture.

It may sound easy but there are certain factors that you need to keep in mind. Remember, you need the correct pieces together and place them in appropriate places to give you that stylish new room.

The first thing you need to consider is your room area. Determining the room size will give you the idea on how big your rugs should be. As a rule of thumb, the rug should be 24 inches shorter than the shortest wall of the room. It does not matter whether you have your entire floor carpeted or not. You may still use the rugs on them.

For living rooms, it would best to choose area rugs that will complement your furniture layout. You can have 1 big rug if you only have 1 conversation area, or 2 to define 2 seating areas. With these groupings, you need to remember that there should be at least 1 foot of rug from the furniture but not more than 2 feet of it extending from them. Usually, an 8 x 10 foot rug is used in a living room.

Bedrooms. A rug placed in the bedroom is usually placed to enhance the focal of the room, which is the bed. It should be remembered that at least one-third of the carpet must be under the bed. It should also extend to about 30 to 36 inches on its sides.

To create a cozy dining area, you may put rugs wherein the table and the chairs could fit in perfectly. As a rule, your rug should be 40 to 48 inches bigger than the size of your dining table. It is important that when you place your rug, your chairs, even when pushed back will fit it.

Type of Rug. Rugs are made from different materials. You may want to choose the type of rug that would match your room’s design. There are basically 2 types of it - rugs made from natural materials and the synthetically made. Naturally made rugs are usually from wood, grass or cotton. These are usually more expensive. Synthetic rugs on the other hand are made from nylon and polypropylene/oleifin. These are usually used in homes because they are a lot cheaper.

Lastly, let us go the fun and most exciting part; you need to choose the suitable color and patterns. Dark colored rugs tend to create an intimate space in the room while light colored rugs can expand the area. To hide falling hairs, pet hairs and dirt, you may opt to choose heavy patterned rugs to conceal them. You may choose Oriental rugs for traditional themed room, bold geometric patterns for a modern, sophisticated room and a braided area rug for a countryside themed room.

The market can offer you a wide array of options. There are different designs, shape, colors and sizes. You just need a creative mind to use these affordable floor accessories to redesign and enhance your room in an instant.

Rugs add beauty to the fixtures of your home or office. It displays an accent to the floors which will help enhance its appearance and ambience. Or you may want to try wool rugs for your children.

Nylon is another type and popular for its easy maintenance and durability.

Then there are natural fibers. Wool is extremely dyeable, durable, soft, and clean. Wool is considered to be the superior fiber and tends to be the standard to which all other rug materials are measured. Cotton is softer than wool but cotton rugs are not nearly as durable as their wool counterparts. Jute is not a very common material used whenever it comes to making rugs It is the softer than cotton, possibly softer than any other natural fiber. Unfortunately whenever Jute is exposed to direct sunlight it can either darken or fade in color and whenever it is exposed to moisture for long periods of time, it will eventually disintegrate.

This is preferred by many because the rug lasts longer as it doesn’t easily succumb to wear and tear compared to a loosely-woven rug, the result of fewer needle and stitch counts.

Warp yard - this is the stationary threads and is actually the sturdiest fibers.

Hand-carved - this is a design made from hand shears.

Border - this is the group of designs that are repeated in one direction in the border or outer lining of the rug.

Warp yard is stationary threads. This are the strongest fibers used in rug making. They are intersected with wefts, which is the filling material. These are woven through the warps.

Rugs have several uses and it can make a statement no matter which way you choose to display your rug. Using different colors, shapes, sizes and styles are easier than ever when you consider all the options you have available today.

Every room is an individual room so it should be decorated that way. If you use floral designs you should compliment it with warm colors or cool solid colors. If you use small patterns compliment them with large patterns to tame them down.

If you have furniture as a focal point you can use your rug to compliment your focal point. Use colors that blend in and avoid primary colors that may stand out.

If your focal point is the area rug itself you can use bright colors or large busy patterns to allow the rug to stand out.

If your focal point is a fireplace you want to use patterns and colors that will enhance the fireplace and not distract. You cannot have more than one element competing for the focal point. This will make the room seem unbalanced or busy.

There are other ideas to decorating with rugs:

1.) Light spacious feeling rooms can be achieved by using light colors and patterns. Warm areas can be achieved by using dark colors and patterns.

2.) A different shaped rug can bring a totally different look to your room. Try round, hexagon, octagon, or oval.

3.) Depending on the room’s general appearance, fringes on rugs can add an Oriental flair to a room. Be careful when vacuuming the fringe, though: do not use the vacuum brush or beater bar, both of which can damage the fringe fibers.

4.) Make used or worn rugs into sofa pillows by removing the worn-out parts. Adding tassels to the pillow edges can make them unique and stylish.

5.) A colorful rug may also make a good wall decoration. Tack or nail it to the wall, or sew loops at a long edge, run a window rod through them, and attach the rod to a pair of window brackets. You will make only two holes in the wall and the rug will hang straighter also.

Decorating with rugs can give life to a dull room. Use the rugs to make a statement or to instantly change the look of a room.

Keep up with current trends in rug decorating and enhance your home with round braided area rugs.

  • Rugs and Their Care

A good rug can last a long time and if it is looked after well, it can not only prove to be durable but also retain much of its original beauty. There are some useful ideas that will be of practical use when it comes to the maintenance of a rug. If you would like to see your rug looking great after years of years, consider the following ideas.

When you are placing your rug for the first time, put a rug pad under it, irrespective of the flooring underneath. Not only does a rug pad hold the rug firmly in place, it reduces the amount of wear and tear on the rug and helps keep it looking better longer. A rug pad should be between 3 and 6 mm thick and should support the entire area of the rug. It should be replaced whenever it wears out.

When it’s possible rotate your rug to increase the life of the rug. This will help you avoid high traffic areas that sometimes tend to wear down quickly leaving a path in your rug. It will also avoid sun fading if it is located at a window with direct sunlight.

Clean your rugs at frequent intervals. If you don’t feel you can do a good job, you can get your carpet professionally cleaned.

Avoid vacuum cleaning delicate rugs whose fibres could get damaged with the force of suction. When you are drying a rug, don’t hang or drape it - it should be laid flat on the ground and care should be taken not to step on it until it is completely dry.

Don’t let sunlight fall on your rugs directly. Use a curtain if you must, because bright light will fade the colours of your rug.

When moving your rug around, do not pull on the rug. Instead simply roll the rug up and carry it to the destination. Avoid setting any furniture on your rug while it is rolled up. This can cause permanent damage to the fibers of the rug and can also cause creases that you cannot get out.

  • How To Create A Room You Will Love

Posted on October 20th, 2009 Judith Wankston No comments

When we have just moved into a new place, we are often struck by one particular room in the house that can possibly be our special nook. In order for the room to be our favorite part of the house, we have to do more than just “connect” with the room. Of course, it also has to look good! You would want this place to be your very own - not just restful and peaceful to your senses but equally appealing as well.

In preparing your room for a new look, you must first make it available for decorating. Take out the things that are not needed and furniture that can interfere with a smooth flowing decorating work. You should make your room free of clutter and distraction so you will have a clearer idea of your goal - how you want your room to look like.

Next up you’ll have to decide what will be done with the walls. Why the walls first? Well, just like the floor, they can’t be moved out when they are the wrong color. They’ll have to be repainted again, which means all the furniture will have to be covered up or taken out of the room again. As such you’ll have to put some careful thought in about what you would like the room to look like when all the work is done.

When you’ve got the walls figured out, then it’s on to the floor. Now unless you have a substantial budget set aside for this, you’re probably not going to redo the floor. Perhaps touch it up a little and give it a good clean, but essentially floors stay the way they are for a number of years. However, there’s nothing like a decent area rug to either lighten a place up or dim it down; serve as a focal point or as an accessory to one.

Area rugs have been around for a long time. Its longevity just implies that they have been essential decorating items especially for our homes’ interiors. Deliberate the purpose of an area rug to your favorite room. Do you want it to be the first object in the room to get attention? If so, a rug with a bold or striking design such as the medallion found in most Persian and Oriental rugs will work best for you. Do you want it simply as an attractive decor to the room? Then choose an area rug with a compatible color to your room or one that accentuates your furniture, such as the sofa, coffee table or drawer where you plan to place your rug. The benefits of an area rug are numerous, but bottom line is, it is a vital piece for transforming your room without the hassle and bustle.

When the walls and floor are done, you can now proceed to the actual decorating items. Place some furniture either new or your old ones (just make sure to clean them!); add accessories such as artworks, flowers or plants, photographs and books or magazines; and work on the lighting, curtains and other essential decors in the room. You’ll probably be spending most of your time here so you have to make it right. You want to make it a place you’ll never get tired of no matter how long it’s been. Don’t get too excited however and overdo your decorations. Make sure each piece looks good with everything in the room.

Leading Interior Decorators have finally revealed that area rugs online are their number one choice for home decorating. And this seagrass rugs, has been very popular this year.

  • Area Rug On The Wall: A Unique Decoration

Posted on October 17th, 2009 Randy Hoover No comments

Walls are not exclusively for artworks, photographs or certificates of achievement. A wall in need of improvement is not only answered by a paint job. Believe it or not, an area rug can be placed on the wall for beauty and practical reasons. The former as wall hangings or decors, and the latter as a wall cover for seedy-looking parts. So yes, area rugs too are not just for walking on.

An example of a nice place to put an area rug as a wall decor is on a large wall like in the entryway separating areas of the house. For instance, the hallway to the staircase and the first floor to the second storey. The wall’s space will be filled up and an object with color. This is a simple way to improve a wall’s otherwise blank appearance.

Even if you live in a more restricted space, hanging an area rug is still acceptable. Don’t think that this decorating technique is only meant for bigger houses. Not true at all. Smaller spaces hence, smaller walls can be adorned by smaller rugs. Smaller though doesn’t imply less quality or second rate. With the assortment of area rugs, even smaller sizes have amazing collections - great shapes, designs, colors, materials. What the bigger rugs have, the smaller ones also do. They just differ in, well, size. Oh yes, and price. So your living in a cuter space has its perks too.

When you are choosing an area rug to hang on the wall, you should choose one with some sort of design. You will not want to hang a plain area rug on the wall, but one with some type of design. The design does not have to be ornate, however. Although there are rugs that are made primarily as wall hangings, any area rug with a design can be used in this manner. This will not only add color to the room, but it will also add a bit of warmth. The area rugs on the walls will make the room seem cozier.

There are hanging systems sold in specialty stores used for hanging objects on the wall. If your rug is on the heavy side, you have to secure it more, but locking the top part will do in most cases. The rug will hang effortlessly. If your rug is quite light and thin, a strong tape is already effective. If it doesn’t work and your rug ends up being friends with the floor, just be grateful it’s all fabric and not glass breaking. Change to plan A and use sturdier hanging essentials.

Take your time in shopping for the rug of your choice. Focus on those with your favorite color or theme for the design. Area rugs as wall hangings are one of the easiest, most convenient and brilliant ideas in home decorations. Your home will look so nice that inviting guests might just become a hobby.
