When you are buying lighting fixtures from the Internet you will need to think about shipping expenses. Many companies will give you a good deal on the product and then charge more for shipping and handling. This sneaky little trick is very common, so be aware of it when you read the fine print. Remember to do the math and really understand whether you are getting a good deal.

Different types of shipping: the cheapest form of shipping will typically be ground shipping and you will be able to save money using this method. Some companies will charge a little more for something like FED EX to achieve overnight delivery. It can be very surprising to see how much shipping and handling differs from place to place. Some organizations will offer their clients a variety of options like 7 day, 3 day and overnight deliveries. And, of course, the price varies. If you’re in a hurry for the items you’ll no doubt choose the overnight option.

Being able to keeping track of things: use a spread sheet like Excel or one of the variants available from Lotus or even Google documents. Take note down of all shipping and handling prices, together with the name of the provider. This database will become very valuable when you need to compare your findings and work out the most efficient deal.

Cap on fees: One way to save money is to see if the company has a cap on their shipping and handling fees and how much that cap will be. A cap on the shipping and handling will prevent you having to pay larger fees for more items. You can assess shipping costs better if you know that each order will not exceed a certain rate. Sometimes companies might even offer a flat rate.

Larger, well established providers usually give you the best deals both of products and shipping. Many large operators even offer to waive the shipping and handling fees if the order is over a reasonable set minimum. They can do this because they have the buying power to do it. There providers also treat them well because they are guaranteed continuous buyer because they are established.

To many people, shipping costs are insignificant. However, if you were to add up all of the shipping costs your business pays each year you might get a nasty shock. Being efficient is all about trying to get the best price on everything, and this often includes shipping.
