Posted on February 12th, 2010 David Ryan No comments

Look for someone who pays attention to detail when looking for your Sash Window Repairs specialist. This person should be equally good at painting and decorating as some older homes have a lot of beautiful detail in their windows to be restored. Look for references on people who specialize in this area and take a look at their work if you can.

Take a look at your windows to determine what kind of restoration they made need so that you understand the work that needs to be done. The mere fact of a house settling can make the window hard to operate and in this case will most likely require some carpentry to square it off. It may just be that the windows are painted with many coats over the years and it's causing them to stick. They may need stripping and if they are old lead paint could be involved causing special removal techniques.

Removing the sash will involve prying the front molding off to allow for it's removal. At this point the cords can be accessed and removed in order to measure them for cutting new ones. The molding strips on the upper sash can now be removed and it can be removed along with any hardware.

Once both sashes are out the putty can be scraped and the window frames cleaned and checked for dry rot. If any is found then the damaged areas can be filled with epoxy and left to dry for a day before sanding and painting.

Hand roll new glazing compound and lay into the exterior groove of the sash and press the glass into it, insert glazier's points evenly spaced to hold the glass in.

Use another hand rolled length of glazing compound on top of the glass and bevel it with the putty knife. After it has cured about a week, paint the putty with an oil-based primer and a coat of acrylic latex paint to the entire sash.

Remember to look for the weatherstripping being replaced and the hardware cleaned before reattaching. The pulleys should be sprayed with Teflon or silicone and the cords reattached to the upper and lower sashes. Weights get replaced and the final molding put back into place.

  • Pros and Cons of organic Mattresses

Posted on October 29th, 2009 Samantha Liu No comments

There are many advantages of organic mattresses and they are almost always a better option than other mattresses. For example, they’re dust and allergen resistent meaning that they don’t carry allergy trigger spores as easily as other mattresses do.

The natural wool or organic cotton used in the mattress also provides warmth naturally in the cold winter time. Some mattresses such as the Simmons organic mattress have the special characteristic of absorbing humidity to create a dry sleeping environment.

At the same time, it provides air circulation of using natural materials and helps to regulate the temperature of the mattress. Organic mattresses will help you breathe with ease.

Sleep is a key factor in causing many illnesses that people suffer from. With a lowered immune system from lack of sleep, a person is more susceptible to all kinds of diseases.

Some organic mattresses are made from natural rubber. These are also very durable and offer the same health benefits such as being resistent to allergens. This is another great mattress for asthma sufferers.

The disadvantages to using organic mattresses are few and far between. The first disadvantage you might have already noticed is its price. The price of an organic mattress is a lot higher compared to traditional mattresses.

Another drawback is that some people say that their organic mattress has a strange smell. The last drawback is that the mattress will get worn out when it’s used for a long time. However, organic mattresses do not wear out faster compared to any other mattresses.

The most important thing is to make sure the organic mattress you’re buying is truly natural and not just an advertising ploy. There are some stores/manufacturers who do that and you have to be careful. Don’t purchase without inquiring about all your questions and validating all of your concerns.

  • The Importance of a Guarantee Online

Posted on April 13th, 2009 Tom Sanderrs No comments

A guarantee is an important part of buying a product. Risk free buying is smart buying. You want to always have a guarantee with the product you purchase; you never know what might go wrong. Ideally it should be unconditional and if possible the shipping should be free. There are several reasons why you should always buy a product with a guarantee. Here are a few.

Why do you need a guarantee?

    * In case of a defect in product: Even if you are buying from a reliable company defective products can occur. Not everything works perfectly and sometimes goods are already defective from the manufacturer. That is why it is best to find a company that offers a replacement without charging you for the shipping.

    * Shows credibility of the company: a business that offers an unconditional guarantee with its products is one that can be trusted. They obviously have pride in their products and do not expect them to be defective. They work hard on their quality control and do not have many flawed products. This type of enterprise does not expect and probably does not have many returns because of this.

    * You can have confidence in your purchase: There is a lot of inconvenience involved with having to make return trips to businesses because the product is either faulty or not as advertised. Even more so when the product has to be shipped away to be repaired instead of replaced. This is especially the case if the purchase is for business purposes and other jobs or repairs have to wait for the offending product to return.

The advantages of a guarantee for a business:

    * Puts them ahead of the competition: Offering an unconditional guarantee puts a company ahead of their competition. The better the refund policy the more sales a business can make.

    * A quality brand: Some businesses have turned their guarantee into a well known part of their company name. When customers associate a business with a quality guarantee it will mean more sales.

    * It builds strong loyalty: Referrals are a powerful way to generate sales and only comes from loyal customers who are happy with the service they are provided. Word of mouth is still the greatest marketing tool available and can be justified as a replacement to expensive advertising campaigns.

It is very important to understand the different guarantees offered. The best ones will offer you a no hassle unconditional guarantee. They will not make you jump through a lot of hoops to get your refund or replacement. Shipping should be free both ways. This is hard to find but is fair to you the customer as it is not your fault if the product is defective. Make sure you read the words carefully to avoid being tripped up with loopholes in the guarantee. There are some companies who offer guarantees that look good at first sight, but when you look more closely at the details there are subtle loopholes in the guarantee that will cost you money.

  • Sorting Out Shipping Expenses

Posted on April 9th, 2009 Tom Sanderrs No comments

When you are buying lighting fixtures from the Internet you will need to think about shipping expenses. Many companies will give you a good deal on the product and then charge more for shipping and handling. This sneaky little trick is very common, so be aware of it when you read the fine print. Remember to do the math and really understand whether you are getting a good deal.

Different types of shipping: the cheapest form of shipping will typically be ground shipping and you will be able to save money using this method. Some companies will charge a little more for something like FED EX to achieve overnight delivery. It can be very surprising to see how much shipping and handling differs from place to place. Some organizations will offer their clients a variety of options like 7 day, 3 day and overnight deliveries. And, of course, the price varies. If you’re in a hurry for the items you’ll no doubt choose the overnight option.

Being able to keeping track of things: use a spread sheet like Excel or one of the variants available from Lotus or even Google documents. Take note down of all shipping and handling prices, together with the name of the provider. This database will become very valuable when you need to compare your findings and work out the most efficient deal.

Cap on fees: One way to save money is to see if the company has a cap on their shipping and handling fees and how much that cap will be. A cap on the shipping and handling will prevent you having to pay larger fees for more items. You can assess shipping costs better if you know that each order will not exceed a certain rate. Sometimes companies might even offer a flat rate.

Larger, well established providers usually give you the best deals both of products and shipping. Many large operators even offer to waive the shipping and handling fees if the order is over a reasonable set minimum. They can do this because they have the buying power to do it. There providers also treat them well because they are guaranteed continuous buyer because they are established.

To many people, shipping costs are insignificant. However, if you were to add up all of the shipping costs your business pays each year you might get a nasty shock. Being efficient is all about trying to get the best price on everything, and this often includes shipping.

A piano cover is a necessity for any person that loves their piano. A piano is a very expensive investment. A lot of pianos are not protected from elements. A non protected piano will not look as new as a piano that is properly protected by a piano cover. A piano cover will help protect the piano from unwanted damage. It will protect it from liquid spills, dirt, and even household pets. A piano cover is a very smart investment. A piano cover will extend the life piano, giving a homeowner the extra insurance it needs.

Everyone needs a piano cover. Even Hollywood stars that play the piano for a living should take care of their livelihood. Piano covers do a fantastic job protecting the star’s piano and will do the same for you. Think about it to yourself, what you would choose if you were a big musical star. Create your own. See if you can make a better piano cover that the rich and famous.

Billy Joel is my all time favorite artist. He has had top 40 hits since the seventies. He has entertained audiences all over the world. He is best known for his first hit Piano Man|His first successful hit was the song “Piano Man”. It has become his best known song. Billy Joel’s piano cover was designed from his lyrics in the song. On the top of the cover in big letters it has the words “Piano Man”. Around his name it has a lot of the characters from the song, John the bartender, the waitress that served him the drinks, and bar patrons Paul and Davy. Billy has said that it is quite a conversation piece.

Other rockers have visited him and wanted to get their own conversation piece. Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones has the tongue and lips design that was created by an artist that first appeared on their 1971 album, Sticky Fingers. It has become one of the most recognizable logos in the world.

Paul McCartney’s piano cover had the most sentimental design. Paul’s late first wife Linda McCartney had given his piano covers as a gift. She was an artist by trade and designed almost all of the piano covers. Both of them like the outdoors. Her ideas came from the different areas of the world. Paul loved his first wife and they would bring him a lot of joy as they reminded him of her.

Other stars have great designs too. Liberace had one of the most expensive. Liberace had a flare for the dramatic. His had a lot of glitter and diamonds that covered the entire grand piano. Elton John would write on his with a magic marker whenever he had a song idea. Some of his biggest hits were written on that first piano cover. One of the best ones I ever saw was by the singer Pink. It was a very simple design without a lot of flare. A person could very easily guess the color. It was bright pink!

  • Garden Landscaping Made Easy

Posted on November 19th, 2008 Gary Antosh No comments
    by Keith Markensen

It used to be that a garden was simply a place where you grew some varieties of fruit, vegetables for the table and perhaps a few flowers for decoration. These days there are a myriad of landscaping ideas from which you can select one to suit you. Garden landscaping has evolved into a number of purposes and styles together with the changing ratio of humans to space available and the evolution continues. Some gardens are designed with wildlife in mind. Others are places where food is cultivated, or a place to relax, perahps just an area specifically for pleasure such as a flower garden. With these in mind, what do you want to include in your garden?

    Garden Landscape Ideas

There are any number of “tricks” you can use to design a garden that is in tune with your personality and requirements. Each garden has five basic elements and you should remember to include these in your garden landscaping plan: color, form, line, scale and texture.

Color needs no explanation. Whilst some people like the idea of using one color throughout, it is usually best to include a number of colors in your garden design. Balance is the key here, so take care to ensure that the colors you choose do not clash or compete for attention.

Next is form, which is mostly to do with the size and shape of objects and how they are balanced in the garden. Just the simple aspect of the size and shape of leaves on a tree can have a dramatic effect on your design.

After form comes line. This means that your design should be such that it “flows” with the movement of the eye. The placement of plants and arrangement of borders will direct the eye around the garden.

The next element is scale and this is concerned with the size of your garden plants as they relate to the design. This may include the giant White Bird of Paradise tree or the small ficus bonsai tree. Once again, balance is important: you do not want a garden with all the small plants grouped together in one area and the large plants including the Giant Bird of Paradise in another. Included in scale are other objects in the garden such as sheds, pools and ponds.

Texture is the final element and it also requires balance. One texture throughout the garden would be bland and uninteresting. Conversely, too many textures can be “busy” and confusing. Create texture in your garden so that it “flows” from one area to another.

The final personal touches to individualize your garden come after all the necessary specifications are completed to your satisfaction.

  • A Little Adds a Lot in the Bath

You may want to make your bathroom beautiful and dramatic looking, but make sure you take practical matters into account as well. This can be a very beautiful space in your home but it also has to function well. New bathroom accessories help to make this easier than ever. Some of them have to be thought about in advance and installed as the bathroom is installed, but some of them can be added on well after the fact. A sleek new shower stall is a pleasure to behold, but if you don’t have a way to keep all of the paraphenalia of the showering process neat, it will lose its beauty quickly. Install a shower caddy, and you will be able to keep all of the soaps, shampoos, body washes, etc. off the shower shelves or bathroom edge and well organized. Depending on how much “stuff” you have in the shower, you can just hang an organizer over the shower head, or you can install a multishelf unit on rods. If you have decided that it is time to put in new bathroom florr tiles, why not take it one step further and heat the bathroom at the same time? Stone and ceramic tiles are very popular flooring materials in bathrooms, but they can feel really cold after a hot shower. If you are installing the floor, it is a simple matter to put electric heating under the flooring, as long as you do it before the floor is installed. This will make the floor more comfortable as well as heat the entire room.

Another addition that will help keep you warm after a bath or shower, but will not cost as much as a heated floor is a heated towel rack. This is a real luxury found in some of the best hotels and it is a delightful luxury to wrap yourself in a warm towel after a bath. Small luxuries such as this make life sweeter.

One other small, inexpensive but practical aaddition to a bathroom is a place to sit. You can decide upon a seat that goes right into the bath or shower, or you can just add a little seat outside. A small stool or bench that allows you to sit and dry feet and legs, or rub on cream or foot pumice is another little luxury you will appreciate. Forget the days of jumping from one foot to the other to dry them.

These kinds of small luxuries will add beauty to your bath but also add a great deal of comfort to your bath routine.
